The Silurian - Book One: The Fox and the Bear by L.A. Wilson

Set in the Dark Ages of Post-Roman Britain, The Silurian is the story of King Arthur told in a compelling new voice. A first person narrative, spoken in grim and graphic detail by Arthur's closest friend and foster-brother, Prince Bedwyr, the Fox. A boy of sixteen, taken to his first great conflict, Bedwyr begins his story on the battlefield where Arthur lies missing after having won his first engagement to war against the invading Saxons, Hengist and Horsa. This is the Fifth Century AD, a time of fierce honesty, as Bedwyr's own words speak it, the words of a young warrior who lives his life in the blood, guts, turmoil and love of an age that was both brutal and brilliant.

Editor review:

While the shaky continuity makes the first few chapters a difficult read, it is worth persevering, since the style matures and the storyline is strong. I am certainly inclined to read the next book to see how the story and the characters develop. Full review here.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book

I really thoroughly enjoyed this book. This is an author whose writing I hope finds its way to the masses. I am about to read the next. I wasn't as offput by the continuity issues as other reviewers; perhaps it was just offset by the fairly strong character development. Wilson doesn't seem to be afraid to make his protagonist somewhat unlikeable at times- this gives a nice depth during the read.

editor's review of my book, The Fox and The Bear

Though the editor's review of my book is overall good, and I thank him or her for their time in reading and reviewing my work, I would like to remind everyone coming to The Silurian series for the first time, that it is a first person spoken narrative, with a limited point of view, which is not pointed out in the review, and it is a very important point. It means certain aspects of my books will be limited, naturally, to Bedwyr's point of view, the narrator of this entire series. In other words, Bedwyr cannot impart historical or contextual information that he does not know about: the context of The Silurian is Post Roman Britain, Fifth century AD, at the time of the Saxon invasions: this context develops as Bedwyr grows and matures. In book one he is a youth of 16-19, with limited knowledge of his world and its greater context. He will learn this as the series progresses. He cannot tell things he has no knowledge of, and so, the context is limited.

Secondly, The Silurian is, as I said, a spoken narrative, and therefore, Bedwyr will speak informally: that is, he will not speak with regard to grammatically correct forms. Thus, he will say 'me' and not 'I', as this is his voice, his point of view, not mine. Translations for the few Welsh words are in the Glossary at the end of the book.

Inspiring Arturi-ama

An inspired step into the burgeoning stuff of myth and legend. The characterisations are bursting with humanity, as they are forged by the triumphs and failings of life. A must read for cultists of Arturian legend and warcraft.

Could not stop reading...

I was searching online for information on King Author and was linked to a site where this book was recommended and offered as a free download. Thus started my journey through "The Silurian" series of books. Fascinating! I could not stop reading. I have completed the first 9 books in the series and am anxiously awaiting the 10th and final book due out later this year. If you are looking for a fairy tale version of King Author and Camelot, look elsewhere. This is not it. This rendering is raw and compelling and will plunge you into the midst of a post-Roman Briton where you will become part of the action. I have seldom read anything that evoked as much emotion while reading as has "The Silurian". I can highly recommend these books.

What a brilliant book! I haven't enjoyed a book this much since 'Atonement' and that's saying something! Excellent characterisation and writing. Can't wait for Book 2 - hope it comes out very soon.
