Night of Knives by Jon Evans

Veronica Kelly came to Africa to start her life over. Still reeling from her divorce, she is grateful when a handsome stranger invites her to join a tour to visit gorillas in Uganda's wild Impenetrable Forest — a trip that goes desperately wrong when their group is captured by brutal gunmen.
This is no random kidnapping: her abduction is only the first move in a deadly strategic game. Now she must embark on a wild journey across Africa, to unveil a malignant conspiracy before it consumes entire nations — and thousands of lives...

Editor review:

Helicopters in the jungle. An aggressive strapline. The cover suggests that this is an all-action thriller aimed at a decidedly male readership, and the reader looking for this will not be disappointed. But there’s more to the book than that. To begin with there’s a degree of the stereotyping typical of macho novels but as the action develops so do the characters. Full review here.

Night of Knives by Jon Evans
This is one of the best thrillers I've read for years. It has everything from a wonderfully convoluted plot to fast-paced non-stop action with some of the best descriptive writing I've read—setting the scene perfectly without interrupting the flow. As well, there’s an excellent cast of characters whose behaviour is at all times credible, if somewhat braver and more resilient than normal. The evil-doers are truly evil, but not exaggerated, indeed, the real-life conspiracies and intrigues of all our governments and their minions are worse than the plans of the nasties in Night of Knives.
For me the best thing is that the author obviously knows what he is writing about, has thought deeply on the topic and makes many penetrating, truthful observations about political, social, ecological and personal problems that afflict humanity.
This book is that rare thing—a moral tale posing as an absorbing tale of corruption and horror that informs but never preaches.

I really liked this

The start was enthralling indeed but then this reader became bogged down in a plot that became increasingly implausible.....sorry.
