A Run Around the Block by Joy Hutchings

Sonia True, divorced but somehow not separated from Terry True, is in a rut. Her family take advantage of her, Terry even expects her to take care of his young son from his second, faltering, marriage. After Terry becomes a national hero he realises that he wants Sonia back and sets out to make it happen, not letting his burgeoning celebrity get in the way. When Terry gets his big chance – appearing on the reality TV show, Definitely Dancing – he seizes the opportunity, hoping it will help him win Sonia back. Can Sonia refuse him in front of Princes William and Harry?

Editor review:

Run around the block is a very entertaining romantic comedy, highly recommended to X-factor fans. Set in the UK, it describes the adventures of a modern English family that becomes famous after the father saves the children from a fire. The writing style is good, however at times the story contains too many unnecessary details and slows the plot. There is also a ghost story that appears towards the end of the book that is not properly resolved; and it doesn’t match up with the general comic tone of the story. Overall this is a “feel good” read for a relaxing day.

I lost interest ...

I read about one third of this story over a period of weeks, it moves too slowly, and I lost interest.

The author has watched too much 'Eastenders'

There were more sub plots than story to this book. Totally unbelievable, it was like reading a scrip for a (poor) soap opera. Sorry Joy, but keep it simple next time.

Ghost story a distraction

I feel the ghost story part was very distracting to this story and would have been better left out or changed. I am a great fan of mystery but the death and ghost part just seemed so wrong in the last 100 pages of this story.
I don't know the age of this writer but I do find that many older writers are following the trend of the younger writers by detailing too much as in every detail of how each person in the story is dressed or how they look from head to toe. Just seems a bit much.

Thank you all for your comments.

Thank you all for your comments. I really like to hear what readers think about the book and always hope you have enjoyed it. To 'bit disappointed' - didn't you feel that Sonia did, in the end, achieve her aims? Yes, she's a softie, particularly where Felix is concerned, but she's also a determined lady who in the end has Terry wrapped around her little finger.

I also appreciate the editor's comments but I think s/he means 'Strictly Come Dancing' not 'X-Factor'. Yes, I am a big fan of Strictly!
