The Three Dollar Phoenix by Walt Sautter

Doctor Ed Bennett hadn’t spoken to Charlie since, he had to think now, 1978. Yes, and it was June 1978 to be exact. Charlie probably didn’t even remember it. He was so drunk that he could just about talk, much less remember. That was the day the Raiders drafted him. Ed meets up with his old college buddy and his life changes forever. He abandons his work at his urban health clinic and embarks on a mission that requires him to confront powerful people.

This story started well. It has good characters and I was genuinely intrigued by the mystery surrounding the strange illness. However, the story ended quite bizarrely, like the author wasn’t sure how to finish the plot and just stopped writing. The ‘where are they now’ piece at the end felt like an afterthought, and didn’t fully explain what happened to the main characters. Overall it is an OK read: I thought the story had great potential but the ending left me very disappointed.
